Kamakya Devi Temple Story

Sati was born as the daughter of Daksha Prajapathi, son of Brahma deva. She was devoted to Lord Shiva since childhood and married Lord Shiva against the wishes of her father. Daksha never accepted Lord Shiva as his Son-in-law and wanted to insult him. Hence he performed a Huge Yagna/Sacrificial Fire wherein he invited all the Devas except Lord Shiva and he did not make any offering to Lord Shiva.

In Hinduism/Sanatana Dharma, any Yagna performed without making an offering to Lord Shiva is incomplete and results in evil radiations from the Yagna. Sati devi against the wishes of Lord Shiva went to the Yagna of Daksha and pleaded her father to invite Lord Shiva. She explained about the dangerous consequences of not making a offering to Lord Shiva.

But Daksha never listened to her and hence Sati was forced to lose her life by entering the Yagna Kunda/Sacrificial Fire in order to stop the evil radiations from spreading to the rest of the universe and threaten creation.

Shiva got furious when he got to know that Sati had lost her life in the Sacrificial Fire and sent Veerabhadra, a form of Lord Shiva to the Yagna. Veerabhadra destroyed everything in the Yagna and punished all the devas who had participated in the Yagna knowing fully well that the Yagna did not make an offering to Lord Shiva. He severed the head of Daksha and he was given the head of a goat. Daksha realised his mistake and started reciting Chamakam Veda Mantras. Chamakam Veda Mantras end with 'me' which is similar to the sound from a goat.

Shiva took Sati on his shoulders and started to dance furiously. All worlds trembled with his Rudra Tandava/dance. In order to protect creation, Vishnu with the help of Sudarshana Chakra cut Sati Devi's Body into 51 parts and the 51 parts fell in various parts of India.

Kamakya Temple is the place where the Yoni or Reproductive organ of a female fell on earth. Once the Maha Chaitanya or powerful body part of Sati Devi fell on earth, the earth started to move downwards. Lord Shiva installed his Trisul here which stabilised the Earth in Guwhati. Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara have performed penance in Guwhati which is also known as Kamaroopa.

Manmatha/cupid thought that he could even bring in desire in the mind of Lord Shiva and threw a flower arrow at him. Manmatha was burnt to ashes by Lord Shiva in order to annihilate his wrong idea and ego. Kamaroopa was the place where Manmatha prayed and was given back life. Hence he constructed this Temple.

The word 'Kamakya' means the 'Renowned Goddess of Love'. There is also Idol/Murthy of Kameshwara and Kameswari in the Temple. Every year marriage ceremony of Kameswarara and Kamakya in the form of Kameswari is performed in Guwhati.

Here in the Garba Griha/sanctum sanctorum, there is no idol form of the goddess. Instead the Garba Griha comprises of a cave and there are steps which go down to the interior part of the cave. The interior part of the cave has a natural spring which has water all through the year. The Yoni Mudra or Reproductive organ of the devi is said to be below the water and water is given to devotees as Prasad.

Ambuvachi or Fertility Festival of Kamakya

Every year Ambuvachi festival or Fertility Festival of the Goddess is celebrated wherein the spring water in the sanctum sanctorum turns red. The Goddess is said to undergo her mensural period and the Kamakya Temple is closed for 4 days. Yogis performed pooja and tapas during this period to increase their powers. At the end of the four days when the Temple is reopened, devotees throng the Temple to get the flowers/pieces of the cloth drenched in red water of the spring as prasad. Agriculture is not carried out during these 4 days and nearby temples are also closed during these days.

Guwhati as Pragjothishapura

Guwhati was also known as Pragjothishapura or the place where astrology flourished even in ancient times. The Kamakya goddess is the mother of all planets, stars, living and non living things in this planet. Hence her Yoni Peetam is the place where all creation of even planets started. We are the children of Kamakya devi.

Since planets and stars themselves had their birthplace here, Astrology or study of movement of planets and stars impacting human life flourished through Sadhakas here.

Narakasura in Guwhati

Narakasura demon wanted to marry Kamakya devi. Kamakya devi set a condition that he had to build steps from the base to the top of Neeanchal hill within a day to win and marry kamakya devi. Kamakya devi wanted to trick him and made the Cock roost in the middle of the night signalling dawn. Narakasura  was fooled that he had lost the game. There are still unfinished steps leading to the top of the Hill.

Narakasura was the terrible ruler who ruled Assamese state long ago and Lord Krishna killed Narakasura here. It may be noted that Diwali/Deepawali festival is celebrated in remembrance of the death of Narakasura.

Dasamahavidya Temples

There are separate temples for Dasamahavidya or Ten forms of Goddess Sati around Kamakya devi Main Temple in the Hill. The Ten forms are,
  1. Kali
  2. Tara
  3. Chinnamastha
  4. Bagalamukhi
  5. Dhoomavathi
  6. Bhairavi
  7. Bhuvaneswari
  8. Shodashi/Lalitha Parameswari
  9. Rajamathangi
  10. Kamalatmika
Dasamahavidya corresponds to the unique spectrum of female divinity encompassing all the aspects of Goddess Sati from her Violent approach for the Destruction of Evil to the most beautiful form wherein she smilingly grants the wishes of her sincere devotees.

Even the offering made to Dasamahavidya according to Tantra Shastra are different. Example: Rajamathangi form is offered Leftover food. The Tantriks will be in a state of pollution with their hands and mouth stained with leftover food while worshipping her. This is reversal of the usual procedure of worshipping goddess.

If one introspects, one can understand the significance of this form of Rajamathangi. Apart from Nature's Bounty in the forms of Trees, rivers, mountains, flowers, vegetables, fruits etc., there is also pollution of Nature's Beauty mainly due to Humans act.

The Garbage, Drainage and Sewage of Human Population is polluting the soil, rivers and underground water also. There has to be a form of the universal force of God that decomposes all the waste leftover by Humans so that the Natural Ecosystem of this world is protected. This form of Goddess can be related to the destruction of evil like Bhairavi or decomposition of food like Rajamathangi.

There have been instances in the world wherein even Nuclear waste have been washed away by floods into rivers and oceans and yet no effect due to the radiations has affected the ecosystem. This is because the Goddess in her violent forms protects all her children i..e.. people like us from all forms pollution, by being omnipresent in the ecosystem.

One should not mistake that these are the only duties of the Goddess. The entire creation, sustenance and destruction of this universe is her duty and the above mentioned unique ones can be well understood in places like Kamakya Temple as she resides there in all her 10 Dasamahavidya forms.

There is a Sowbhagya theertham here that was created by Devendra himself according to the Sthala Purana.

Bhairava : Umananda Madhava
Each of the Shakthi Peetam is associated with a Bhairava Form. Form of Bhairava is Kamakya Devi Peetam is known as Umananda Madhava. This Bhairava Form is said to be the Protector of the Goddess Form in Kamroopa or Guwati. Interestingly Guwhati is located in a district known as Kamaroop District in Assam till date.

The Temple for Umananda Madhava is located in an island in Brahmaputra River can be reached by a Boat only. Since the water of Brahmaputra river is immense and forceful, one has to be very careful while crossing the river. During the monsoon season, the entire island will be covered by water and nobody crosses the river to reach the Temple during rainy season.

Animal Sacrifice in Kamakya Devi temple

Animal sacrifice is still carried out in Kamakya and Dasamahavidya Temples. There are two Sampradaya or form of worship in Santana Dharma/Hinduism. One known as Dakshinachara Sampradaya and another known as Vamachara Sampradaya.

Dakshinachara Sampradaya is the sattivic or peaceful worship of God by offering Fruits and Flowers as Prasad. Vamachara Sampradaya is the worship of God through practices like Animal Sacrifice.

This is because there are different types of Human beings who live in this planet. There are people who prefer Saatvik vegetarian food and others who prefer Tamasic Food like Animal Meat.

But there is only one mother for both these types of people i..e.. Goddess Kamakya. In Hinduism any food that is offered to God is known as Prasad and is said to be blessed form of Food. So according to their nature, people offer their type of food here and take it as prasad.

Kamkya is the Goddess who can turn even a tamasic pravrithi meat loving person  into a Saatvik Pravrithi Vegetarian person and then convert him/her into a deva/celestial being who lives without food and water sustained only with the power of the Cosmic Energy around him. There are Sadhus in India in places like Badrinath who live in Snowy regions like Badrinath without Food and water.

One can worship Kamakya Devi according to one's pooja method and get her blessings. All forms of worship is accepted by her.

51 Shakthi peetam and 51 Sanskrit Alphabets.

The 51 Shakthi Peetams house the energy of the 51 Sanskrit Alphabets. Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, India houses Harsiddhi Temple wherein the forms of 51 Matruka roopam of the Goddess is painted in the celing of the Temple as seen below. Harsiddhi Temple is also one of the important 18 Shakthi Peetam.

In Tiruvarur Thyagaraya Shiva Temple in Tamil Nadu, Sati devi is known as Kamalamba and in the Prakara/corridor there is a Tiruvasi Known as Akshara peetam. All the 51 Sanskrit Alphabets are inscribed in it.

The 51 Sanskrit Alphabets are Beeja Aksharas or the syllables which represent the creative energy of the Goddess and the base for the mantras of various Gods and Goddess. One can introspect and understand that Mantras and words are formed by joining the base alphabets or Aksharas only.
